DRY STITCHED WALLS of Hampi

There are several enclosures walls within the urban core, each enclosing a different area of the citadel. Examples are the Zenana Enclosure, Royal Enclosure, Palace Enclosure etc. These Enclosure walls are built entirely of granite stone blocks of irregular shapes like seen in this picture. The walls are 4-5 feet at the base and taper to less than a feet wide at the top, height of walls range from 20 to 50 feet. There is no mortar holding these stones together, it is the weight of these stone blocks and the irregular shapes that keep them in place. This fine technique of building non weight bearing walls is lost today. The stones are dressed so beautifully they look on the surface like they've been stitched together, there is no gap between stones. If mortar would have been used, this wall wouldn't have survived 500+ years like they have.

STONE COLUMNS OF VITTALA TEMPLE

The stone columns captured in this lighting showcases the enormous amount of coarse detailing. These are the famous Musical columns of the 56 pillared Ranaga Mantapa of Vijaya Vittala Temple at Hampi. These columns is the pinnacle of Vijayanagara style of temple architecture, erected during the reign of Sadashiva in 1554 CE. While early Vijayanagara columns were simpler, often lathe turned, in early 16th century the shilpis got more creative with elaborate pillars with multiple colonettes and rearing Mythical creatures as well as human figures. This pillar here is the absolute peak of that design evolution. This style then was picked up by other artisans in southern India and influenced pillar designs of 17th and 18th century.
