The stone chariot at the Vittala Temple Complex is

The stone chariot at the Vittala Temple Complex is amongst the most recognized monuments in Hampi. We see hundreds of pictures posted of it everyday, however this particular picture presents a unique perspective with the wheel in focus. So let's learn a little bit about it. . ⠀
Each of the four wheels on the chariot are carved out of a single stone. Geometrically they are near perfect circles. The concentric circles drawn on the wheel is also perfect. So how did ancient artisans and masons cut and carve these stones to achieve such high degree of accuracy? This was done with an advance tool that people believed is a modern innovation. Many advance tools were used by the masons in building of temples, one of them was a large lathe machine to turn stone pillars, bases and wheels. Remnants of such machines can still be seen in royal area and the ASI museum.⠀

The Young Archaeologist Program

Our signature educational program designed for school children. Here we teach them how history can be interpreted using evidence. One way of gathering evidence about the past is through excavations, and we demonstrate this by conducting a mock excavation activity. Students work in teams to learn the process of excavation and documentation of a site. They then interpret the past based on their findings from the excavation. We supplement this with studies of ancient rock-art, neolithic sites & inscriptions.

While Hampi is known as the erstwhile capital of Vijayanagara empire (1336 to 1565 CE), human settlements in the region date back to at least 2000 BCE. Boulder hills surrounding Anegundi village to the north of Tungabhadra are filled with evidence of neolithic sites. At Kadebaklu there is a neolithic metal foundry adjacent to a rock shelter where ceramics of different types have also been recovered. At Hire Benakal we find ancient burial sites with over 60 dolmens (burial tombs) made of stone. Ceramics and rock art has been found at this site as well. ⠀

Our own team at Explore Hampi have discovered several undocumented sites in the area. The image above for instance was captured by our team on one of our expeditions. It depicts someone important, perhaps a tribal leader (with a headgear) and his partner (with a skirt like garment or robe) participating in some sort of ritual. Other scenes depict hunting, dancing, cattle herding. These paintings give us an important insight into lives of prehistoric humans in the region. ⠀

Most of the rock shelters with cave paintings are inaccessible, some of them are high up on boulder hills, some are on private land with restricted access. Today it is very difficult as a visitor to gain access to these locations on your own. Another local craft from this region is the Ilkal handloom cotton saree. Beautiful and classic designs are available in the town of Ilkal which is a pit-stop on the way to Aihole from Hampi. ⠀
