Hampi gets its name from the legend related to the Virupaksha temple. Pilgrims have been coming here from 8th century which is at least 600 years before establishment of the Vijayanagara empire here. It is also the only major temple in Hampi that survived the sacking of the city post defeat of Vijayanagara Kings. All other Major temples of Hampi are in ruins and there is no service or worship. For 1200 years this temple has been the center of religion, culture and traditions for people in this region. On this tour we will learn why Vijayanagara Kings established their capital city here, what is the origin of the name Hampi. We will hear stories from ancient texts and traditions that keep these stories alive even today. We will participate in the rituals of the Virupaksha temple and understand its importance. We will visit several other monuments on the way and learn about their significance.
