Hampi is one of the most beautiful and evocative of all historical sites in southern India. It was established as the seat of the Vijayanagara Empire in the mid 14th century, under thier reign art and architecture flourished in South India. The city had over half a million inhabitants making it the second largest city in the world at the time.  At its peak the empire spread to entire south India encompassing present day Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and parts of Orissa. In CE 1565 the Vijayanagara empire fell after facing defeat at the battle of Talikota. Following this the enemy troops conquered the capital, pillaged it for six months before abandoning it.  So extensive was the damage that the city never recovered.  Today only structures made of solid masonry survive as evidence to the glorious past. The site is a protected UNESCO world heritage site, spread over an area of 265 square kilometers encompassing beautiful temples, basements of palaces, remains of aquatic structures, ancient market streets, royal pavilions, bastions, royal platforms, treasury buildings and more.

Today we will be exploring one of the main clusters named Sacred Area. As the name suggests this was the religious center of the capital city, a number of ancient temples and structures are in this area. The sacred area is spread along the banks of the mighty river Tungabhadra. She is the basis and origin of everything in Hampi. She has witnessed the boulders hills form over millions of years, she has seen early humans settle on her banks, she has seen many a sages and mystics, she has seen the rise and fall of one of the greatest empires in India. Hear origin story of Vijayanagara and visit important sites in the sacred area including Virupaksha Temple, Vittala Temple, and monoliths on Hemakuta hill. Enjoy an unique view of the riverside as we cruise along on a coracle boat.

The city of Vijayanagar at one point had over half a million inhabitants making it the second largest city in the world at the time. Several travellers from around the world visited during this period and wrote glowing accounts of a magnificent city.  Abdul Razzaq, a persian traveller wrote “The City of Vijayanagara is such that the pupil of the eye has never seen a place like it, and the ear of intelligence has never been informed that there existed anything equal it in the world”.  Other travellers have written about festivals celebrated, clothing, courtroom drama, which gives us glimpse into the social and political life in the city. On today's tour we will be exploring the urban core of the city. Urban core comprises of military, court and residential structures within the city. Here we will learn about the grand Mahanavami festival as it was celebrated in the city, witness stunning relief sculptures depicting social life.

We will ride on mopeds, bullock cart and auto rickshaws as we explore villages, the rural countryside, farms, irrigation canals and ancient cave paintings. We will visit local tea shop, women’s handicraft organisation, village schools and temples. We will also enjoy a sumptuous home cooked meal made from fresh locally sourced ingredients.

Hampi is often called a living heritage site, this is because of some 29 villages settlements that are within the protected heritage area of Hampi. People living in these settlements are an essential part of the site and if anything enhance its cultural & spiritual significance. Even though the city of Vijayanagara was never established again after the fall of the city in mid 16th century, it continued to be a place of religious & spiritual importance. People have lived here and continued to practice agriculture using irrigation technology developed 600 - 700 years ago. There have been human settlements here for more than 5000 years evident by the abundant cave painting all over the boulder hills of Hampi. The water of river Tungabhadra has blessed this region, several species of birds and animals thrive here. The area also has the most unique and awe-inspiring landscape anywhere in the world with big boulder hills cut through by river and canals, spread between paddy fields, sugarcane fields and banana plantations.

Come with us on an adventure to explore the local way of life in an authentic and immersive manner.

Frequently asked Questions

Moped is a light motorcycle (engine power below 60cc). There are several tens of kilometers of rural roads winding between lakes, villages, hillocks and farms near Hampi.  One of the best ways to explore this area is on Mopeds.  If you have no prior experience riding a moped it is not a problem, one can get the hang of it within 10 -15 minutes of riding.  It is one of the favorite pastimes and adventures that you can engage in Hampi.  You don’t get a chance everyday to ride a motorcycle through some of the most awe inspiring landscapes in the world, so we encourage you to try it.  We will be providing fuel worth INR 200 along with the mopeds.

If you do not want to ride a moped then we can arrange an autorickshaw as an alternative to show you around. The cost will remain the same.  Please note that we will provide either mopeds or autorickshaws but not both at same time.  In case there are few people in your group that want to ride and others don't then we can arrange autorickshaws at extra cost.
