There are more than 28 village settlements in and around the UNESCO world heritage site of Hampi. These communities are an integral part of the site, they play an important role in preservation and upkeep of the site. Presence of these communities makes this a living heritage site. One such settlement is the heritage village of Anegundi. Anegundi is called the cradle city of Vijayanagara because this fortified village predates Vijayanagara by many centuries. The town still has preserved its rich heritage with descendants of the local line of rajas (Royal descendants) having their residences here. In addition this village and its surrounding areas are believed to be Mythical Kingdom of Kishkinda from the great Indian epic Ramayana. Every stone, hill and cave here has a story to tell.
